Hikes in Odda

These are some suggestions for hikes by the tourist office. In the camping, we have a tourist map of Odda, where you will find even more hikes for great experiences.

Buer Glacier

Duration: 2,5-3 hours both ways

Buer Glacier is an arm of Folgefonna glacier, Norway's third largest glacier. To get to Buer follow a path along lake Sandvinsvatnet and further to the right into Buerdalen. Buer valley is a fertile valley with a rich bird life. It is 5.5 kilometers from Odda Camping. It takes 1-2 hours to go up to the edge of the glacier, and the trail is marked. Last part of the trail is steeper terrain, and it is important with good footwear.
Be cautious and follow the instructions. Do not go too close to the glacier, it is constantly in motion!
For glacier climbing, contact reception at the campsite or tourist information.

Folgefonna and Holmaskjær

Duration: cca. 5 hours one way

The tour starts from "Egne Hjem! on the south side of Tokheim river, cca. 2 km from center Odda on road 550 to Utne. The trail is marked and goes in a varied and somewhat steep terrain. The trip is relatively demanding, and takes approximately 5 hours one way. It is important with good footwear, warm and wind-proof clothing, as well as map and compass. If there is wind, the branches that marked trail on snow can be blown away. The weather changes very quickly up by the glacier, and there is often fog there. Up on the glacier there is possibility for accommodation at the cabin Holmaskjær, 1565 m, which belongs to Odda Turlag. The cabin is always open.

Jordalstølen

Strand - Jordalsstølen - duration:  1-1,5 hour
Strand - Buer - duration: ca. 4 hours one way

From Odda camping there is a path along lake Sandvinsvatnet. Right after the bridge take a left towards the Strand (Strond). The tour starts at upper Strand, about 3 km from Odda camping. The trail up to the farm is very good, partly made of stone steps. The trail goes through a beautiful landscape, and part of it goes along the waterfall Strandafossen. After cca. 30 min you will come to the plateau where the trail leads into the Nedstestølen. The landscape has a rich flora with many beautiful mountain plants. At Jordalsstølen, there are plenty of fish in the lakes, but most of them are small. From Jordalstølen you can continue the trip to the left around Jordalsnuten, over Tverreggi, and down to Buer valley. This trip will take approx. 4 hours (from Strand to Buer). 

Strand - Sandvin

Duration: 1 hour

From Odda Camping follow a path along lake Sandvinsvatnet. Right after the bridge take left towards the Strand (Strond). This road is part of the old road between Odda and Røldal. You will come to old road at Strand, and then down over bridge to waterfall Strandsfossen, then the road continues to Sandvin. The road goes through a beautiful landscape with lakes, waterfalls and mountains.

Rossnos

Duration: 3,5 hours up, 6 hours both ways

From Odda center, take road 13 towards Kinsarvik. Pass gas stations Esso and Shell, then take first road to the right, and then first to the left towards Freim. The trail starts at the top of Freim through "Freimstølen". The terrain is quite steep. From Freimstølen, the trail is marked with red T's all the way to Rossnos, which is the highest of the mountain tops around Odda. Varden, which can be seen from center, is at 1401 m.


Hildal - Brekke

Duration: 2-2,5 hours both ways

From Odda centre take a road 13 towards Røldal up to Hildal, a distance of 10 km. From Hildal to Brekke goes a long, high and narrow ridge. You will come to old road just south of the bridge over the river Stølselva at Hildal, on the left side of the road. The first part of the road is the tractor road. Just before arriving at Brekke is a small flat area called Gatnaskil. Here the road goes to "Hildalstølene" and further to Hardangervidda. This is the toll road to Hildalstølen. Towards south there is a car road to Låte and further west to Reinsnos.There is a large parking place and a good starting point for shorter or more difficult hikes.

 

Espelandsmarka

From Odda center take a road 13 towards Røldal. The trip from Odda to Skarsmo takes 20-30 min. From Skarsmo you can take a small side road (behind the store) to the farm Espeland. Further the road crosses waterfall Espelandsfossen and you can see Låtefoss on the other side. The farm Espeland has been runned since 1600. The area Espelandsmarka is located about 300 metres above sea level. The area is very well suited for families, and there is easy access to Folgefonna. One can go shorter or longer trips, and there are good roads and trails in the area.

Trolltunga

Duration: 6-7 hours both ways from Mågeli top

From Odda take a road 13 towards Kinsarvik. After the second tunnel on the way from Odda (after 6 km), take a first road to the right to Skjeggedal, first driving through Tyssedal. After the soccer field the road continues up the valley. It is 7 km from the main road to Skjeggedal, and it takes approximately 15 minutes to drive. The total driving time from Odda center to Skjeggedal (where the "Trallebanen" is located) is about. 25 minutes.

The tour starts at the lower point in Skjeggedal. The line "Trallebanen" goes to Mågeli top, which is 850 m above sea level, and the trip takes 13 min. The trolley takes 9 passangers on each trip. If the "trallebanen" is not operational, you can walk up the trail, which begins on the right side at the lower point of the line. This will take 40-60 min.

From the top point of Trallebanen and into the Gryteskard (1,5 km) you can follow an old road construction road. Take a trail to the right up to Gryteskard, and follow it further up Trombeskard. On top of Trombeskard there is a mark that shows the way to Tyssevassbu, while the road to Trolltunga continues. By Florenseter there is a stream that can be difficult to cross by the heavy flow of water. Horse trail continues towards Endeåplatået located on the right side of Stornut. Between Florenseter and Endeåen may be steep areas with snow which must be crossed.  All the way there is a nice view towards Ringedalsvatnet, but beginning of Endeplatået is fantastic as that viewpoint. In the south, one can see Ringedalsvatnet with waterfall at one end and Langedalsdammen, while the west one can see Ringedalsdammen, Einseten, Mosdalen and Folgefonna in the background. Horse trail continues to Tyssestrengene. After Tyssestrengene you must still follow the horse trail about 800 m, afterwards take a right to Trolltunga which is from this point about 100 meters away.

Mosdalen

Duration: 4-5 hours both ways

From Odda centre take a road 13 towards Kinsarvik. After the second tunnel on the way from Odda (after 6 km), take a first road to the right to Skjeggedal, first driving through Tyssedal. Ved fotballbanen fortsetter veien oppover i dalen. After the soccer field the road continues up the valley. It is 7 km from the main road to Skjeggedal, and it takes approximately 15 minutes to drive. The trip starts from the other side (right) of Ringedalsdammen, by the parking place at the Åsen transformator station, about 500m above the sea level. From the parking area follow the old path passed the cabins at Åsen. At the top up at Åsen, after the Eplehaugen and Nonshaugene are passed, you have a beautiful view over Ringedalsdammen towards Tyssestrengene, Trolltunga, Preikestolen and Teinanuten on the other side of the water. Mosdalen is located at 993m above the sea level.

 

Hikes in Røldal area

Round trip: Røldal - Grøndalen - Røldal

Duration: approx. 4 hours

The start is just across the road for the Shell station. Some steep parts to begin with, then easy walk to Mjølåna. Here it is a little steep, but the road has stairs and railings. Now the path continues along the river and over the unsecured bridge over the river and over to Tjødna. From here follow a path to Austdalen and further down to Røldal.

Trip to Storavatnet

Duration: approx. 4 hours both ways

Drive to Valldalsvatnet and park below the dam in Hyttejuvet. From here the path goes in easy terrain passed numerous stone arches. By Storavatnet you can walk around the lake to the walls after Øvlandsstølen. From here you have several options. You can either walk the same route back or follow the tourist paths to Grytingsstølen or Røldal.

Røldal - Austdalen

Duration: approx. 2 hours both ways

Start by the E134 in the village on the opposite side of the former Røldal shop building. Follow signs to Austdalen. After the area with houses, you will come to T-marked trail. Steep at first, but gradually flatter. Good viewpoints. Nice waterfall on the other side of the valley. Austdalen is a nice farm valley with river and pleasant picnic opportunities. Nice walk, even for children!

Trip to Røldalssåtå

Duration: approx. 3 hours both ways

Sauda Turlag has marked the trail from Ekkjeskar and to the top. Steep, but good to go. Great views in all directions. Not for families with children. Should be in good shape.
